In a recent Windows Update (February 23, 2014) the BlueTooth Raelink Driver update for Windows 8.1 was included as part of a Windows 8.1 update package, the update never finished installing and prevented the rest of the updates from getting installed. The fix had to include a System Restore, multiple reinstalling of the other updates and lost features of the PC, like the sound in the account picture. If the System Restore would have failed, it also meant a regression to 8.0 and a loss of all files and software that was installed. This would have meant over 1000 in technical support and rebuying of all the software, since new policies do not allow for a replacement via disk like in the old days. It took seven hours of work by two different maintenance teams (HP and Microsoft) to restore the computer. The BlueTooth update was excluded from the update, it had to be done manually, since automatic updates (the recommended method) would not allow this exclusion. As far as I know, nobody has taken responsibility for this damage and the responsible company was never notified. So, I am taking the steps to notify the community of this possible problem to their PCs. I have a somewhat similar experience with the disappearance of the Bluetooth driver after a recent Microsoft system automatic update. My HP Pavilion dv6-3114ca originally had Windows 7 installed. I purchased a Windows 8.0 Pro disk (single installation) from Microsoft to install on a Toshiba A200 which has since been de-commissioned and retired to the scrap heap. When I attempted to use the same disk on the HP Pavilion dv6-3114ca, Microsoft Technical Support was needed because the product key was no longer valid (for a second installation). After Microsoft Technical Support successfully enabled the Windows 8.0 Pro installation on the HP Pavilion, online updating to Windows 8.1 Pro followed without any problems. As previously mentioned, a recent system auto update resulted in the loss of Bluetooth and I used the oldest system restore point in an attempt to resolve the problem and was again unsuccessful. At the West Edmonton Mall Microsoft Store, technical support experts were unable to restore the Bluetooth driver on the HP Pavilion dv6-3114ca that was now using Windows 8.1 Pro. HP's website says: “ If your product supports your operating system, HP offers your driver and software at no additional cost through the HP website. HP provides software and driver updates for the operating system that originally came with your HP PC or laptop, as it was designed and tested for that particular operating system. Changing the operating system on your computer (upgrading or downgrading), puts the system into a configuration that might not work with the hardware design.” The HP website support for driver(s) replacement recognizes my HP Pavilion but will not provide a Bluetooth driver for anything other than the original (Windows 7) operating system. Because the HP Pavilion is out of warranty, Hewlett-Packard requires $99.99 to troubleshoot the issue. There was no mention that HP would stay with Windows 8.1 Pro. I suspect they would revert to Windows 7. How can I return to the previous condition when Windows 8.1 Pro worked successfully with Bluetooth? NOTE: There is no physical switch to enable/disable wireless. It has to be done through PC settings. • Launch Settings Charm and select Change PC settings. • Select Wireless from the left pane. • Under the Wireless devices option, move theWiFi/ Bluetooth slider to turn it off. Move the slider again to turn it on. How to search and add Bluetooth devices? • Launch Settings Charm and select Change PC settings. • Under PC Settings, select Devices. • Click Add a device to search for the Bluetooth devices. • Click your Bluetooth device to add. How to display Bluetooth devices? • Go to Start Screen. The Bluetooth devices that you have connected in the past and pinned to Start Screen will be listed as tiles. • To see all the previously connected Bluetooth devices including those, which were unpinned from Start Screen, go to All apps option from the Start Screen. The devices are listed under Bluetooth Devices. How to transfer files between devices using Bluetooth? • Launch Start Screen and select your Bluetooth device. • Select Send File and select the desired files to transfer.
